US Retail Sales Report - Q1 2021 (PDF)

The last 12 months of retail sales have been the most volatile of the modern era. Sales during the Great Recession look like a peaceful ocean-view compared to the spikes of COVID-19. It's no wonder that shortages remain while businesses struggle to anticipate consumer demand. Even today, 74% of companies report supply issues.

Based on the latest data including the US Census, The Survey of Consumers, and the Consumer Confidence Board, this 10-page report highlights the latest retail sales trends and consumer sentiment from the first part of the year and outlines what both retail and consumer product companies can expect for the remaining year. Some highlights of the report include:

  • March retail sales hit an all-time high of $557 billion
  • Grocery sales still grew, despite the reopening of restaurants
  • Consumers, despite being flush with savings, will cautiously draw down on it.
